If you think having to connect at ATL is a good experience, wait to you come through Metro -- you'll never want to connect in ATL again.
(Mrs Bob H and I avoid that airport, unless ATL is our destination for the trip).
Best place to smoke is probably the Fox Sports Bar, near the TSA checkpoint on the main level. Come out of the tunnel and keep going straight and it'll be on your left. Allow about 10 minutes to get from there to your gate.
Chances of upgrades have changed this year, mainly because there are fewer planes to get upgraded on.
