I used the SAN route many times from LGW on the 777. It was a great run and so much easier to get up to OC rather than down from LAX. INS was a breeze as was car rental etc.
Now if you going down to SAN then fly into LAX and drive rather than waiting for a commuter.
I was never fortunate enough to use the route but agree that SAN is a breeze to use.
And it's a pleasant drive, just use the toll road!
