Its not common but its happened to me a couple of times over the years on LGA-DFW, BOS-DFW, and DFW-SEA. It used to be common the DL JFK-AUS flight that DL had for a few years.
Why does it happen? Are the tanks not big enough to hold enough fuel in certain weight/heat circumstances? I can see that with the DL JFK-AUS flight (E170) but I'm surprised that might be the case with the bigger planes.
