The Australian government's list of prohibited items includes "Any other piece of wood, metal or any other substance big enough to threaten someone." This sounds vaguer than the TSA! I would guess a bottle is ok, but it sounds like it's a judgement call on the part of airport security, but you could also check the experience of folks in the Quantas or regional Australia forums.
