Thanks, all, for your responses. The landscape has changed a bit and I now only need 2489 miles. My budget/appetite for this is fairly low - would hope for a total spend at or less than about $300. (Timeline would be sometime before the end of October.)
Any suggestions on how to go about finding these routes? The ones suggest above are certainly not intuitive, at least to me, so I'm hoping to learn a bit about how best to find these. (Sadly, COA doesn't seem to offer its weekly web fares from LAX very often.)

CO joins *A 10/25, so wait and see what the ratio will be for earning EQMs on UA. So you will beable to purchase a UA tkt and credit the EQMs to CO, no different then flying Delta today and getting credit on CO
Unknown is if the ElCheapos will earn 100% or 50% as they do with DL & NW today
also keep an eye open for LAX-HNL when its on sale its <$300
