There is actually a really good and fast rail link from Waterloo station to London "Southampton Parkway" airport that stops outside the airport and takes about the same time as getting to Gatwick.
Fastest train is 1hr 7 mins so more than twice as long as LGW! That certainly brings London Birmingham into the running. 3 fast trains per hour at 1hr 9 mins.
