Hi all,
I flew YUL - YYZ today. The flight was smooth and the service was great. However, for the first time while flying AC, an advertisement accompanied the safety video that was played prior to take off.
The ad played right after the safety video. And unlike the ads that precede the tv/film program we choose, it played on all the screen and the sound was coming through the PA system (akin to the safety video).
I understand that if I choose to use the entertainment system that there will be ads that would precede, or follow the program. (oh, the days when we could fast forward them...) However, I find it odd and almost inappropriate that an ad would follow the safety video. Especially in the case that is not "played" but "broadcasted" through the plane. And it is not a short ad either...
Is this a stand alone incident that only happened on my flight, or is this a new implementation with all the flights now.
I understand the value of the screen real estate on the IFE, but at the same time I think that my personal space should also be respected. Perhaps if the advertisement is a necessity, then a middle ground could be compromised? That the ad is played but the audio is not broadcasted through the PA but through headphones? To be bombarded with a corporate video advertisement at the beginning of a flight isn't really a recipe for a good journey, I think.
Just my 2 cents. What are the thoughts of others?
Michael
