I do agree the current 77E product may leave a bit to be desired. With DL planning on adding the 77L BE seats to the 77E, hopefully this concern will be addressed shortly (not sure based upon the current state of the economy).
Either way, with the 77L taking over this route in the near future, DL's JFK-NRT product will indeed be competitive.
Once the herringbone J flat seats on in the 77E or the route is served by a 77L DL will be a good bet. I think the DL herringbone J and the new CO BF seats are about equal, however, the CO seats will be a bit rough on taller folks because of the limited space for feet when the seats are in a flat position whereas the DL herringbone seems to have more ways to maneuver oneself. The CO seats are 2x2x2 so might me better for couples or families, while the DL seats offer more privacy and aisle access for everyone.
