That's the ruse - it's the way some US travellers walk round corporate "economy only" rules - the ticket says it's economy, but.... FWIW there are also YUP "economy" fares.... Basically the airline is giving you First class domestic travel for the price of a flexible economy ticket because they can't sell these seats any other way. Better that than they give them away as "space available" upgrades.
They are not space available upgrades, they are booked into the A or P booking class; it is no more space available than needing I class to be available for a BA I class business class ticket ; AA does sell F tickets , so to say that they cannot sell them any other way, is untrue
