Just make sure that the flight you're on is 2 class instead of 3 class as the KUP's book into the next higher cabin from coach. For 2 class planes this is obviously to domestic first class but this credits as First miles / tier points (the instant uprade books into class P for info).
The confusion might have arisen as 'K' is indeed a discount economy code with BA. Maybe she heard K when you said KUP, maybe she doesn't know about these fares etc etc.
K is also a discount economy code with AA. The -UP appendix allows people to fly up front even though their corporate travel policies may mandate economy-class booking codes.
