The confusion might have arisen as 'K' is indeed a discount economy code with BA. Maybe she heard K when you said KUP, maybe she doesn't know about these fares etc etc.
K is also a discount economy code with AA. The -UP appendix allows people to fly up front even though their corporate travel policies may mandate economy-class booking codes.
