I am thoroughly confused. I have been looking at tier point runs, and I thought the fare class to go for was the various KUPP fares, as I thought from the threads that they counted as first. However, the woman at BA has just told me that they count as discounted economy. Clearly, I need to get my facts straight!

Any of you AA tier point runners out there that can give me the straight dope?
KUP, YUP etc. are definitely amongst the fares you want. How are you booking these? If you look at aa.com and choose "schedule & price", you want fares from the "Instant Upgrade" column. In the end though it doesn't matter what it's called - if it offers you a seat in the First Class cabin of a US domestic service without you using any other kind of upgrade instrument, then you ought to get TP's based on F travel which is the objective.
