Assuming you are talking about the NJTransit/Amtrak EWR terminal you actually cannot walk there. There is no public access other than via the monorail.
For curiosity's sake, I google mapped it. Since there is no direct public access as you stated above, one would have to take a circuitous walk that would take nearly 2 hours. Hmmm, THAT or the monorail?
