I don't know what your friend considers fair in this case; but, if he finds Delta's recommended reaccommodation unacceptable, they will attempt to reaccommodate according to your friend's wishes. Advise them to do some research and find a DL/NW LAS-CVG itin that they find acceptable, then call Delta and ask to be rebooked accordingly.
