Glenlivet is a good "beginners" malt whiskey.

But I'll always prefer Glenmorangie... unless there are cigars involved... which calls for Bunnahabhain or Lagavulin.

The challenge used to be to educate the FAs that Glenmorangie rhymed with "orange" not "meringue."
