Not necessary, the process is automated now. If the upgrade request is transfered to the airport list.

Delta's system will release seats for Medallion upgrade depending on what they think they can sell. A Medallion's eligibility for these seats depends on their elite level, 5 days before departure for Platinum, 3 days for Gold, 1 day for Silver. This means IF Delta has decide that the F seats will not sell, Delta will release these seats to Medallions. So for a Platinum Medallion, any time from 5 day before departure until departure, if Delta releases F seats for upgrades, the PM is eligible. Same thing for Gold but 3 days and 1 day for Silver.(Within each Medallion level, there is an order of priority based on Fare Class, Delta AmEx Reserve and other factors).
DL does NOT have to release any of those seats if they believe the seats will sell. If that's the case, then you have the Gate Lottery where Medallions are eligible for the seats at the airport (again, priority is based on similar factors as mentioned above).
