Never thought about your question as to whether both names are submitted to the airlines.
All I can say is that with my wifes' and I accounts, the miles do show up in FF account specified. I suppose they do send both members' names to the airlines, since I have put one of either of our FF numbers on folios without giving the name of the partner in question.
My wife and I have different surnames and except for the time the HHonors names and her FF name did not match exactly ( we did a correction sending a fax)the miles have posted without problems.
