Downgrades are rare, but they happen (it happened to me on my second ever [fully paid] CW booking - I had no status).

I think downgrades happen regardless of fare paid (though, it would make business sense to take that into account, as compensation is based on fare paid) but not independantly of status. If you have status, you are pretty much secure.
