If you read the PayPal TopUp card posts you'll see how this works. But here's a basic summary:

Set up your regular PayPal account to take money from your Amex. Now if you pay for anything on eBay (for example) using PayPal it will pull the money from your Amex through PayPal. This way you get miles using eBay.

So by the same principle if you set up your PayPal TopUp card and fund it from your regular PayPal account. Say you top it up to the max, £1000, it pulls £1000 from your Amex onto the PayPal TopUp. This works the same as a purchase.

So now you have:
An Amex account £1000 in the red.
A PayPal TopUp card with £1000 on it.
1000 - 2000 Airline Miles (depending on which Amex card) accrued from your Amex purchase.

The next step is what to do with the £1000 on your PayPal TopUp. You have options:
1) Spend it. Works like a debit card.
2) Withdraw it. Max £200 per day. Costs £2 per withdrawal.
3) Figure out some other convoluted way to get back into your bank account. (my favourite!)

Either way you need to pay off your Amex. If you can get the money back to your bank account (the cash withdrawn or using Zopa) then you can just pay off your Amex bill using your bank account debit card.

Zopa is just the next suggestion in the established method. People have been doing this for a while. Zopa was just a new suggestion, by me, to get around the cost of withdrawing the cash.

The reason Zopa was sugested is that other tried to put it into a online-gaming account and transfer it out. This didn't work too well. Zopa works fine.

The whole thing is not without hassle, time and having to remember all the steps.

If you're having trouble PM me your e-mail and I can provide screenshots or something.
Shhhhhhh I reckon he may work for AMEX!
