i certainly believe that they dont get cash from LH, but have some sort of ad/milage rebate deal.
but besides that, the "free" room is always subject to availability and so is the shuttle service.
When the shuttle service is so limited as to make LH first class customers wait an hour or more to get to the hotel and then the hotel says that there is no available shuttle service to return to the airport over a five hour window, there really is quite a bit more to be expected than this.
there is no info on LHs website that the use of the free dayroom actually also includes a shuttle from/to the airport. so they are already providing more than i would expect. just have a look

in fact as a LH F pax i would expect one thing, to be transported from A to B in a F seat...
