I share OP's frustration and may also look elsewhere to fly better products.
I wonder if anyone at UA corporate is thinking outside the box on the conversion issue.

The switch to the new IFE for C and F requires new IFE changes in coach, requires new seats in coach, requires changing the seating layout in coach which adds up to a big pile of money.

I wonder if simply deferring the IFE would work as an intermediate solution.

Suggestion:
  • For now leave the existing F seats as is. There isn't much difference between new F and old F.
  • Put in new C seats, but leave the new IFE disconnected.
  • Buy a bunch of personal DVD players, one, per seat, with no batteries that instead draw power from the A/C outlets of the new seats.
  • Then stock each 777's C cabin with a bunch of DVDs.

Would I rather have access to movies not yet released on DVD or a flat seat? Easy choice.
