Their overall model isn't to fly these random non-hub to non-hub routes, and using AE probably makes it worse, not better, since it's a lot more expensive to operate on a per-seat basis. I'll take AE SAN-LAX only to connect to LHR or JFK or MIA or whatever. But I won't take AE to SJC or SFO when there are far better alternatives. Anyone who would pick AE probably hasn't been on WN lately, let alone VX. There's no way I'd fly AA to the bay area, 1000 AAdvantage miles or not.
I don't mind the RJ for SJC to SNA, and I am not driving to SFO to fly VX, as right now I pay $0 for parking for SJC, and it's a lot closer by 20-25 miles.
So, it looks like WN will be the only carrier on that route.
