There was no argument for IDB compensation in the form of the FAA-mandated IDB compensation (cash) because no such thing happened. The OP's son was not IDB'd.
As to what compensation he should have received for not getting on his flight, that becomes a question of the carrier's policies and what the GA negotiates with the displaced passenger.
But he wasn't IDB'd.
