The beach area in front of the Sheraton is small, but all of Waikiki beach is at your disposal. You can walk for just a minute or so and have PLENTY of beach to build sand castles.
I never think it's worth considering the pool in Waikiki, since the ocean is right there. Pools, with their chair systems, just create stress where there shouldn't be any.
