I recently rented a car and a few hotels from Hertz and Hilton on AA.com. I guess what I was thinking was I might as well get AA miles for the hassle. The problem is the car was a POS and a hassle at return. I think Hertz saw where I booked the car and whatever code was used in the reservation put me in a tiny, unwashed car. No power locks or windows either, I didn't even think those existed anymore. When I checked into two separate hotel rooms, I was put in a smoking room on the first floor. I asked Hilton why my Diamond status and preferences didn't show up when I arrived at the hotel. They said they couldn't add my HHonors number to a 3rd party reservation and noted I would not get any credit for the stays of points for the rooms. I asked AA.com about this, it didn't seem right since I didn't even save any money by booking with AA.com. AA replied with a tough <redacted> email to me. I'd recommend not booking anything but airfare from AA.com, if not, you've been warned.
