Even though the OP's son is still entering his senior year, please take note of this regarding all schools in the UC System. I have been out of higher ed for about two years, but still talk to many faculty and staff.
UC and CSU (Cal State) will receive 20 percent less state funding this year than they did two years ago. The UC system, which has about 220,000 students, is raising student fees by 9 percent, reducing freshman enrollment by 6 percent and cutting at least $300 million from the budgets of its 10 campuses. As a result, out of state and international freshman enrollment will be hit first.
UC is also forcing most of its 180,000 employees to take furloughs and pay cuts of up to 10 percent, which officials say will make it harder to stop competing universities from poaching academic stars. Plus, as the UC system has a better credit rating than the state of California, the system is purchasing the bonds for a state project.
