This was my experience. Have not tried O&O, but we did a week at Madinat in January & would not rush back. It did not even feel that busy, but service was not up to the standard of a 5* hotel. We had booked a beach facing summer house, but asked to move when we realised that these did not have the private pool. With a baby the private pool was the important thing for us. The main pools are very busy & reminded me of the horrible package holidays I used to go on before becoming a spoilt snob!
If I went back to Dubia ( which is not likely as I prefer Oman ) I would try to O&O Residence as this seems like the most peaceful beach option. Madinat is full on fake, grand, busy, full of outside guests etc.....they even sell boat tours to non guests to tour the resort!
