And then I got to the airport and discovered that there were still 4 seats in FC available! New problem: once I checked in, I couldn't tie my wife to my 1K priority status. So despite more upgrades than I'll be able to use this year, we checked in coach.

At the gate, sanity returned. I explained the problem to the gate agent 30 minutes out, and he looked at me and said: "I can fix that." And he did.
