If we're referring to the same promotional email, I read it a little bit differently. The small print about 2009 earnings counting towards 2010 status seem to be in reference only to MQMs towards status with Mileage Boost. I believe you have to spend at least $30k on the card in a year to qualify for any sort of mileage boost.
I'm trying not to hit gold this year for various reasons so I wish the former explanation was true. Basically I don't see myself earning 25k MQMs in 2011 based on a work transfer in the pipeline so I'm hoping to carry over <25k residual miles from this year to next.
