It would depend on case per case basis I think. In may scenario, it would be cheaper and easier to accumulate miles to the elite status than by segments. I personally have the habits of visiting Japan, so many times in a year and in regular basis, AC offer a very reasonable return fare YYZ - NRT, it would be around C$1000 return all in.... 3 return flight = $3000 will earn your elite status.
