And, of course, there's no frequent-flyer surcharge when you credit the miles to a foreign carrier's program, like Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club, which has always given me at least 1,000 miles per Hertz or Avis rental. Virgin's miles are redeemable on Continental, US Airways, Hawaiian, and several other foreign carriers.
