Long ago London gave my mother and I trouble. It was not just no onward ticket but a lack of assets and some errant signs of being poor.

In reality we had plenty of money but had been unable to access it while going across Africa. Our cool-weather clothing was stolen, all we had was stuff suitable for the tropics and it was a bit worn (we had been on the road for a year at that point.) Passports full of stamps didn't matter to the inspector.

What finally convinced him is we got him to take her (I was 17 at the time) credit card over to British Airways and see if they would accept it. When he found out they would his attitude utterly changed.

Zimbabwe also demanded an onward ticket. We ended up having to buy a refundable one as we were planning to leave by train and train tickets couldn't be purchased airside.
