For me I think BA are making a mistake. I live quite close to Stansted and on a recent trip to AMS, I booked BA instead of Easy Jet as I like the BA service plus lounge and the whole experience.
This has now diminished. There is no longer any food on the flight and for me no real benefit (apart from the lounge) in flying BA when there is not a flight from STN.
In a year this could add up to probably 1K worth of flights. I am sure that I am not alone.
Although BA will save money in both catering plus staffing etc, they have made themselves less competitive against the LCC's i.e. if you would like a sandwich you now have to buy one adding perhaps £5 each way PP to the ticket, this effectively adds £10 to the flight cost.
What about the catering contracts? I assume that this has been reviewed? To remove all shorthaul Y catering must have made a big dent in the revenue of the catering contractor made from BA. Could this lead to another catering fiasco on BA?
BA should look at the operation as other people have mentioned, not diminish the customer experience, there are other alternatives from fortress LHR and cheaper LCC's.
So how much would it cost to set up a sandwich shop in T5?
