You can find numerous cases on FT of travelers receiving a cc refund such as the post before yours and a post last week, this appears to be the case of an extended medical issue.

For short term medical issues, the first response is a full refund in TCs or a credit on the books for future use -- you will find reports on FT for all. As with most things, it is a matter of how hard you push and what you ask for.
