Fare class does not come into play at all for BusinessFirst (e.g., Transatlantic) mileage upgrades. If you can't confirm in advance, the waitlist is prioritized by Elite status (Platinum, then Gold/Silver, then all others) and time of waitlist.

The fare class only has an impact on the co-pay requirement. Generally the fare+copay $ amount ends up in the same ballpark regardless of what fare you originally purchase, unless you find a very very cheap sale fare or get screwed with a very expensive last-minute, no Sat night stay coach fare.
