Surprisingly nice was the Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo ( half way between L.A. and San Francisco ). Not superluxurious but inexpensive and new with a very friendly staff. The whole town, in fact, is very friendly. Wonderful coastline, beaches, wineries, state parks all within an hour's drive. The area feels like Southern California was like 50 years ago before it became so urbanized.
