Thanks for the help. I emailed the resort people explaining that I was a lodge (hostel-style) visitor and they responded by saying that all of the resort amenities (shuttle, pool, etc) were available to us as well. But I think we're going to go with a car rental anyway - everywhere I look, people are saying, like you, that a car is ultimately cheaper and gives you more flexibility to see everything you want.
