"To make reservations under the Diamond VIP reservations guarantee, please contact our Diamond VIP desk at 1-877-4HHW-VIP in the U.S. and Canada. Outside the U.S. and Canada, call the Hilton Reservations Worldwide office nearest you."

'Fighting' with the hotel shouldn't be a player under this guarantee.

I'd be interested in hearing about times that the reservations guarantee (within HH's guidelines) was not honored in spite of a request through the Diamond VIP desk...

FWIW, I never had to use this availability guarantee, and if I had, I'd also try to do it through the Diamond Desk.

But... to be fair to the.fluffy.bunny, according to the official HHonors Terms and Conditions,

"Reservations Guarantee applies to reservations made through Hilton Reservations Worldwide or with the hotel directly".

That said, there is a loophole allowing them not to honor this guarantee on certain occasions (and to be fair to HH, Starwood and Marriott all have similar loopholes):

Reservations Guarantee "does not apply during publicly recognized events which result in extraordinary room demand as determined solely by Hilton".
