Riviera Maya-Mandarin orientals bad reviews-what are the better alternatives?

Hi Folks,

We postponed a trip to mexico that we discussed here last january as part of a U.S/Cancun vacation.

We're now doing the trip next month and are about to book the Mexico leg.

The original thread discussed the Tides and Rosewood as alternatives.

GDS are giving excelent prepaid rates including taxes for the mandarin at the moment as part of a stay longer package-however this would be of no use if service is poor and the air con and showers are not working properly as per recent TA reviews.

Problems at the MO were even mentioned here at the time of my thread.

Is the mandarin really that bad?

Showers that don't work and aircon that only cools to 80f [if "cools" is even the word to use] would be a disaster.I'm not prepared to Risk a week of that in what is supposed to be part of this years main get away

I appreciate that Trip advisor is often a haven for the dis-affected but contrasting the reviews between the MO and Mayakoba and I have to be concerned.

Out of Rosewoods 115 reviews-103 of them are either Very good or excelent...and 85 of them rate it excelent.
The Tides is similar.

What do the kind people of this Flyertalk forum think?

We're hoping to book by the end of next week at the latest so all input would be appreciated.
Thank you
