FWIW, my advice is absolutely, positively do not rent a car and drive yourself in Thailand, primarily for the reasons you state (although you will find some road signs in English). Rules of the road can be very different, driving is on the left and a holiday is likely to mean very heavy traffic. Spare yourself. Hire a driver or just wait for the flight.
