I've been op-upped several times after boarding in sitting in my original seat. A couple of times in BKK - the ground agent comes on the plane with a radio and picks out several people in Y to op-up to C.
in SF the gate agent boarded and asked if me and my partner wanted to move to 2 middle C seats from our row 17 bulkhead - we did. She presented it in front of the other Y pax as 'because we were gracious enough to offer to VDB our seats', which we did.
Don't lose hope until the plane takes off!
