From Kurama station, you can either walk or let the Onsen people take you to the village by minibus. The village is the starting point for the hiking trail up.
Stay a while at the temple. The view is breathtaking considering you are so close to one of the biggest urban areas on Earth.
What I do at Kurama is to always visit the Onsen after hiking. With visitors we normally buy a bottle of rice wine from the village shop and sip it with them in the outdoor bath. It can be brilliant in winter...
You can either arrange lunch at the Onsen as part of a package or return to Kyoto proper to eat as I prefer.
There are a lot of other hiking options on the mountains, just remember to bring food, water and good shoes if you venture out. Mountain shrines, rare birds, outdoor restaurants in the summer. Fascinating.
