DHN did this to me once. I travel to small airports where there is no preferred service and occasionally someone will ask for a credit card. This maybe happened 2 times in 3 years. I can't remember what they did when I had a walkup rental last year.

Oops! You got me. It didn't occur to me that small airport locations would work differently with credit cards. All my travel over the last 10 years has been to major airports. But now that I think about it, I recall that during my 25 years of flying my Piper Aztec to scores of smaller airport destinations, I did indeed need to show a credit card every time, whether renting from AVIS or another company.
