As a former Preferred and now a Chairmans Club member, I have never been asked to show a Credit Card to anyone at an Avis pickup site. Neither have I ever had to enter a Credit Card on the AVIS website when making a reservation. In fact, as I recall, during the online reservation process, the site specifically states that no CC is needed to hold a reservation.
Do you only frequent large airports? It seems like most small airports (without Preferred counters) and all non-airport sites require my card.
