Now if you watch very closely when you next see the film "Bullitt" with Steve McQueen (swoons) - when he gets aboard that PanAm 707 - you can see little tiny TV screens in the hat rack. So - I would say that some airlines had them in the late 60s.
I, of course, was still an Unaccompanied Minor unless I travelled with a chapreone!
And I was the person sent to fix it. I recall many occasions on boarding the aircraft in LGW or LHR and seeing the film looping down from the gaps in the ceiling panels. I had to physically rewind the film ready for its return journey and therefore the only thing I could do in the time available was to cut the offending loops, put them in a bin bag and re-splice the remaining film. This was why, if you flew the aircraft at the end of the month the movies probably made very little sense.
Oh, happy days.....
And yes, I also recall the painful "pneumatic" headsets.
