Obviously this was an unhappy experience. However, by continuing to stress about it the OP is letting this one franchisee/operator rent way to much space in his head and is staying miserable for little reason.
I also would not inconvience myself to try and "get back" at Marriott. If business travel to NY is important and the Renaissance is great to you, why harm yourself as well as the Renaissance simply because some otherworld hotel GM is out chasing the local scenery rather than doing his job.
I expect the op will be a lot happier once he forgets the bad experience and gets 4 straight weeks of love and good experience from his Times Square Renaissance family.

PS: I recently stayed at the Sheraton NY at 53rd St and 7th and was pleasantly surprised by how well I was treated. And all this with only a gold from Sheraton and that was earned with 0 nite stays and only AMEX SPG points. I may stay with Starwood a bit more in the future.
