Why not just pack it good and check it? It isn't worth the hassle to deal with the TSA police. They will most likely deny you and then you are stuck and will have to go check it anyway.
This is what I ended up doing but I was reluctant do to so because it was a connecting flight and it would have been a disaster had the item not made it. Luckily, the item made it just fine.

I seriously doubt this would make it through a TSA checkpoint. If they prohibit baseball bats as a weapon, I can't imagine they'd think a board with nails (sharp side or not) isn't a weapon.
I certainly do trust the reliability of FedEx much more than checked luggage but this item was light but bulky and thus was going to be about $230 to ship. I have also had items go missing or delayed with FedEx (not often), so I decided carrying it on would be the best way to assure the presentation actually made it with me to the destination. Then remembered the one item on the presentation board with nails. I really didn't want to check it but decided to take the risk anyway. Next time I'll just pay the $230 and try to ship a bit earlier.
