It would appear that you took an earlier flight in the day Quark999 because the EI137 from Dublin to Boston does offer a direct service.

In my experience it would have also stated this when booking, as the number of stops would be denoted as 1, which refers to the stopover in SNN - in this case for your return flight.

The changing of aircraft is certainly more unusual but probably down to operational reasons.
