It connects to the second bank. Yes, the layovers aren't all very short, but that's how it goes. AA will still capture the traffic, just like they do from Louisville.
Charleston also presents a strong local market (around 140 people per day with an average round-trip fare of $430), like Savannah, so its also important to have the flight well-timed for traffic terminating in CHS.
Can you cite some destinations that leave before 5 p.m.? Because I didn't find any in the half dozen cities I checked. And anything over 3 hours for a layover I consider to be poorly timed and will turn off most travelers. I'll put up with four hours to stay on AA but most people don't have that kind of loyalty.
If the idea is to feed the O&D market, then I still think these flights are poorly timed. Most people don't want to fly during the middle of the day.
