QF will probably deny it if you ask them, but IMHO, since Mr Jetstar took over, the whole focus has changed to. They don't want to focus on premium classes, but budget. During these tough times, their focus seems to be cut back as much as possible and let customer loyalty suffer.
I read an interview from a former QFer (the guy that was widely tipped to take over, but lost out to Mr Jetstar). While he wouldn't publicly agree to that, you can read between the lines that focusing on being premium airline is no longer the goal.
As to the reconfiguration, I thought QF have already publicly acknowledged they got the mix wrong with their existing A380s and will look to rebalance in future aircrafts? I recall they think they have too many J seats and will look to increase Y+ and Y. Y+ seems to be selling well despite the price they're charging. IMHO, if I'm to fork out for Y+, I may as well go with J...
