I appreciate the advice to take the eastern route. Playing at Blackpool or seeing the Lake District at Oxenholme do seem appealing, but I don't think it can be done and still get to Glasgow in the early evening. So, I will check into Durham and others mentioned in the east.
We will be seeing Edinburgh just as soon as we leave our friends in Glasgow and we anticipated stopping in York on our return trip to London.

Chipndeb, when reading this one other option occurred to me that may be of interest. If you do not have hotel reserved in London already for the Friday night then you could opt to take the overnight sleeper train to Fort William. That would then enable you to take the train from Fort William to Glasgow on the Saturday. This is a very beautiful trip and regarded as one of the worlds great railway journeys. However, plan as you already have it is good and sound in my view too.
